ok i have a home network setup between a Desktop running WInXP Pro and a
laptop running WINXP Home. I an NOT sharing internet between the two as both
are wired/wireless into a Linksys router which is connected to my modem. I
am able to view the shared folders in My Network Places, but i am only able
to access each computers own folders. when i try and acces the other
computers folders i get " \\computername\foldername is not accessible. You
might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the
Administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions...Access is denied"

I disabled the ICF on both computers before setting up the network,
although the network setup wizars bridged each computers own Local Area
COnnection to its 1394 Connection, and thereofre i no longer am able to see
the advanced tab in order to enable /disable the firewall. I am clueless
as how to proceed. The shared printer i set up works, but i am unable to
access files on the other computer

Shaun,

Please start by deleting the bridge.

Make sure the browser service is running on each computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser service is
started.

On any XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Home
and Pro, you need to have SFS properly set on each computer. You're probably
best off enabling SFS in this case.

With XP Pro, if SFS is disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel
- Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

With XP Pro, if you set the Local Security Policy to "Guest only", make sure
that the Guest account is enabled, thru Local User Manager (Start - Run -
"lusrmgr.msc"), and has an identical, non-blank, password on all computers. If
"Classic", setup and use a common non-Guest account, with identical, non-blank,
password on all computers.

For XP Home, OR for XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the
Guest account is enabled (for XP Pro, thru Local User Manager (Start - Run -
"lusrmgr.msc")), on each computer.

More about file sharing, between all different versions of Windows:

Shaun,

when your computers are connected to a router then you don't
need another connection like 1394. They will communicate through
the router, more precisely through the switch in the router.

First thing I'd do is remove the 1394 connection entirely.
