File sharing between Home and Pro

R

Rob Harris

I've researched the issue of file sharing between XP Home and Pro and I get
different answers, all of which I've had no success. It seems to be hit or
miss with this topic.

Is it possible to see a File share on a WinXP Pro machine from a WinXP Home
machine? If it is, how?

I have no problem seeing Home edition file shares from Pro. It's just the
other way around I've always had an issue with.

Thank you.

All versions of Windows can share files with each other. If you saw
something saying that Home and Pro can't share files with each other,
it's wrong.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on each computer, making sure to specify
the right connection options.

Configure any firewall program (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, PC-cillin
etc) to allow access by other computers on the local area network.
Note that some antivirus programs (like Norton Antivirus 2005/2006)
include firewall functions.

Browsing network shares through My Network Places is very unreliable.
If that doesn't work, try accessing shares on another computer
directly, by typing the other computer's name in the Start | Run box
in this format:

\\computer

Hi, I had the same problem between Windows Xp Home and Windows XP Pro.
Windows Home liked to access shared files on Windows Pro, but when Windows
Pro tried accessing shared files on Windows Home, it came up with an error
message.

I managed to resolve this by downloading Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit
Tools onto the Windows Home, as this is the one had had problems accessing
from the other PC. Hopefully this link will help you, and the download is
also on this link:

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

That fixes this specific error message that occurs when you try to
access files on a computer that runs XP Home: "Logon failure: the
user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer."

Simply running the Network Setup Wizard on the XP Home computer
sometimes fixes it, too.

I have a similar problem. XP Pro can see XP home files, but not vice versa.
I have done the suggested steps by Steve Winograd. (DOwnloaded Win 2003
Server Resource Kit Tools and run the 3 commands :

net user guest...
ntrights +r....
ntrights -r ....

I still cannot access the files on the XP home computer but my error message
has changed from logn failure to access denied.

Any ideas?

Run the Network Setup Wizard on the computer that can't be accessed.
I'm not sure which one that is: XP Pro or XP Home.
