Is there a way to make the file selector boxes in XP remember the
settings? I like to have "show details" and "sort by name". But each
time it opens it opens as "list" (total chaos) with the file name
sorted random (it seems like). The Expolrer remembers the way you
like to display the files, how do I make the file-selector remember?

'OpenWide' by 'Luke Hudson' (Freeware)
<http://lingo.atspace.com/openwide.html>
I use this under WinXP.
For me, it works with most but not all Open/Save Dialogs.

'MultiEnhancer' by 'ElmüSoft' (Freeware)
<http://www.netcult.ch/elmue/ElmueSoft-en.htm>
I use this under Win98SE.

'File-Ex' by 'Cottonwood Software' (Payware,20 USD,30-day Trial)

I haven't tried this one.

Typically it did not work on the program where I most needed it.
Seems like it doen't "catch" file dialog with non-standard titles
(only those that are names "Save as" or "Open" or similar)....

Too bad :-/

GREAT!!!! Only thing I miss is to set/save the sort order.
Or does it use the sort order from the Explorer!

Si, it follows the sort-order set in Explorer.
(Ctrl-[x]button-closing last Explorer-Window, then 'Folder
Options' - View - Apply to All Folders.)

BTW: Do you know if it works with Win2000/2003/Vista as well?

Per the web-page, "This is a test release. Limited testing has
shown it to work on a release of Win2000 Professional and a
release of WinXP Home." I like it very much, but check out the
following discussion for others experiences.

And just to be clear, even though i use 'MultiEnhancer' under
Win98SE, it says that it supports Win 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP,
2003, but perhaps only English and German versions of the OS's.
