In Windows Explorer under XP Pro SP2, I can't get Search to work correctly,
e.g., finding a word or pattern in a folder of *.php files on my C drive.
Search always comes back with a "no results" message. The drive is shared by
2 other PCs on the network, one running XP and the other running Win2000.
When I try the search on the remote XP box, it too fails. BUT, if I try the
search on the Win2K box, the results come back very quickly!

Been reading some suggestions, like installing srchasst (which I did) or
turning off the Indexing Service (which is off) in XP, but the (non) results
are the same.

Any ideas on how to correct this? Thanks!

XP's search for text in a file function only works for specific file
extensions. You can register additional extensions. See this KB article:
Using the "A word or phrase in the file" search criterion may not work

Another option is to use the free search tool, Agent Ransack:

Double-Click "My Computer", double-click the "Local Disk (C:)
Click "Tools", "Folder Options", click the "View" tab, under "Files and Folders", check
everything except "Do not cache thumbnails"

Under "Hidden files and Folders", check "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck "Hide extensions....", and "Hide protected......"
check the box, "Remember each folder's view setting", click "Apply", "OK"

A file that is required to run Search Companion....

HOW TO: Configure the Search Companion in Windows XP

That damn search assistant...

Disable Search Assistant (Line 15, Right Column)

Old Style Search Engine On/Off (Line 49, Left Column)

Or...
Use TweakUI, Explorer section to set Classic Search:

You probably need to enable the Search Subfolders option. This option
is under More Advanced Options in the search assistant.
