File preview

Some file formats can be automatically previewed in an explorer
window. These are formats like bmp and jpg. However, other formats
like 3DS (3D Studio) shows a bmp preview of their 3D model as well.
How can I create a custom file format *.foo and associate a file
preview to it? Is this part of the windows file header?

I've never done this myself, but I just happened to be reading this stuff on
MSDN about the Windows Shell which probably contains the info you need:
