I have a ton of files in PDF format that I would like to have in a
(simple) database to make categorizing easier. Currently, I just make
file folders with the topic as the name and copy the PDF there. However,
a lot of the files fall under more than one category and I'd rather not
keep multiple copies in separate folders. Is there any good freeware
that will allow me to do this? Something similar to Ant Movie Catalog -
but for storing actual files and information about them - would be very
cool.

Thanks!

Windows. Cross index folder to folder with shortcuts.

I know how to make shortcuts - that's not what I want since some file
fit multiple categories. I want a basic way of classifying them in a DB.

A database program is for storing info *about* files, not the files
themselves. Those I have seen at least. You said, "However, a lot of
the files fall under more than one category and I'd rather not keep

multiple catagories for one file. And without the need for a DB program
to boot.

Do you have many PDF's ?

Do you remember to have read anything on a certain subject but don't
make idea in what disk this pdf is and much less its name?

Do you have a pdf with some images that you want to use in another
document but don't have Adobe Acrobat?

Then this is your program, with the advantage of be Freeware.

Using the potential of databases and the fast search and select tools
classify all your pdf's collection, contained in multiple disks, and stop
searching of that file that doesn't want to appear.

You might try Treepad. You can make any description you want and a link to
the file.

You may try Keynote (freeware with Sources (delphi))
http://www.tranglos.com/free/keynote.html

or scribble Papers (german, free for personal use)
http://www.scribblepapers.de.vu

They are like Treepad lite but much better.

Ooops, let's hope Susan won't read it!

:)

IMO Keynote is a great app (haven't tried the other one). I use both
Treepad and Keynote.

I think saying Keynote is *better* than Treepad is a bit silly - they
have different capabilities. I was going to say it's a comparison of
apples and oranges but they do have many similarities - perhaps cooking
apples vs. eating apples would be more apt. IMO "best" in this case
depends on the intended usage.

Why didn't I ever think of doing that? Thanks DadiOH. :)
