File-Open with Detail i.s.o. Preview view

F

F.H. van Zelm

Hi there,

PowerPoint (2003) File-Open defaults to Preview view.

I prever File-Open in Details view or even better, in my latest used view.

I am very sure that there is a registry setting to do the trick ... because
I used it on PPt XP on my previous laptop.
Only, stupid me (shame, shame, triple shame), I have forgotten what, where,
....

Mvg, Frans

I don't recognize the views your referencing. PowerPoint opens in Normal
View or Slide Sorter view. and normally reopens in the view it was last
saved.

I think Frans means the view that the File Open dialog box defaults to:
Details, Thumbnails, Properties, Other Annoying Views ...

I'd be more useful if I knew the answer to his question, but this is a start.

Now don't I look like the fool. I really must stop and fully read the
question. I think the answer to this is in Control Panel under folder
Options can't be sure. Sonia showed me a quick way to do this. Unfortunately
it like a lot of other things has slipped from my memory.

After looking in all my archived stuff I came across this which is how I set
all my folder views to details which seems to work for the file open stuff
in MS Office also.

In order to set a global file view to be applied to all folders. Do the
following:
1. Open any folder and go to the View pull-down menu.
2. Select what type of view you would like. Ex - List, Details..
3. Go to the Tools pull-down menu.
4. Select Folder Options.
5. Click on the "View" tab.
6. Click Apply to All Folders.
7. Choose Yes to the Folder views message box.
8. Click OK to exit.

Hi Michael,

I gave it a try but ... no. With my PPt it didn't work. Neither by using
Control Panel-Folder Options
nor by Explorer-Tools.

Not from here. Must be time for a new mirror at your place? ;-)

Maybe I'm doing something wrong here. FWIW, I open an explorer window and
choose Tools, Folder Options which leads to the same place, I think.

But that doesn't seem to affect what PPT does.

And what it does is a bit bizarre.

File, Open, click My Recent Documents and get a Detail listing. Name, size,
type, etc.

Click any of the other gadgets on the left (Desktop, My Documents, etc) and get
the List view.

Ah, me. I *do* wish that Bill weren't quite so certain he knows what's best
for me.

In the Control Panel Folder Options under the General Tab do you by chance
have in the "Show Common tasks in folders" checked? I have "Use Windows
classic folders" selected in mine, and I get the Detail view throughout my
system.

Still to close to Christmas for me to look in the Mirror <g>

Your correct in the way you can view the darn things, same both ways. I
would also like to be the one who chooses how I want my system to look.

And fwiw (good call re Classic vs Clown views) ... I'm seeing this in Win2000
where the Fischer-Price interface option is not an option. ;-)

Hi Bill and Steve,

Looks like I have lost 'control' over this discussion, if there were any
control.
All the same: thanks for all suggestions and time spent.

May I get back to the original problem: how to make the File-Open dialog
default to my preferred or latest used view.

I remember that someone, somewhere on Internet published an instant
solution.
He commented on this stupid change in the File-Open dialog after an upgrade
to PPt 97 or 2K from an older version (with proper functionality). His trick
works
on my old laptop in PPt XP with Win2K Server but as I wrote: I have
forgotten ;-((.
I'd like to copy the setting to my new laptop with PPt 03 and Windows XP.
My I send a part of my registry for analysis? Perhaps you can isolate the
needed setting.
I am sure many PPt-users would love to know. What part op the registry to
send? I
expect HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\PowerPoint

Regards, Frans

Hi Bill and Steve,

Control? In this group? Not a chance, sir, not a chance. ;-)

Usually when a thread goes tottering off into the weeds like this, it's because
somebody mentioned food or, as in this case, when none of the participants has
an answer.

I can promise that if either of us knew the necessary registry entries, we'd
have shared them early on; in that we don't know what to look for, it won't do
much good to examine your registry.

or better yet

which looks like it might be what you're after, or close to it.

Yeah! right.

Hi Steve and Bill,

I'll go and have a look at the sites you mentioned. It's worth while trying.
If I ever find the solution, I'll
sure let you know. For now: thanks and ... thread closed!
