File Open dialog box

Access 2000 file open dialog box creates a file with no extension that
matches the first directory in the list.

This then hangs Access.

The file doesn't appear within explorer

It appears to be created by access and can only be seen from the access
file open dialog box.

Any suggestions

Forgive me for being "Jaded", but...

As with any Microsoft software, it is often faster to just uninstall it and
reinstall it, than to try to figure out what's wrong with it:

Attempt a Start-> Settings-> Add/Remove -> Change -> Repair

Once that is finished, do a complete uninstall of Access, reboot, a complete
install of access, reboot and try again.

Then, if it's still messed up, post back here or call tech support or
something.
