I use Excel 2007 and save/use files in the older format and some files when
opened display the file name with a colon followed by a number at the end.
For example, Sales.xls:1 and Sales.xls:2. Both files will open together and
appear to be mirror images of each other. When data is changed in one I can
go to the other and the data is there (I haven't saved the changes). Just
wondering what this meant and how to make this stop happening.

You have two windows open to the same sheet - just close one of them
with the X icon in the top right hand corner of the file window (NOT
the Excel window), then save your file to avoid seeing them next time
you open it.

Hope this helps.

The weird thing is that i only opened the file one time and if i close one of
them, it usually closes them both. If i have the file open already then try
to open it again, it doesn't add the colon and number, just re-arranges the
sort order in View/Switch Windows. If i open up another instance of Excel
then try to open the file, it tells me it's locked for editing followed by
the usual choices. I was able to close one of the windows, saved it and now
it appears to have solved it for now. Welcome to Windows mystery???? Another
thank you letter to Mr. Gates.
