File name extension not preserved when renaming

I find that if I download a file, say a jpg file, and I
get the message that there is an existing file with that
name, I thne rename it and the "file type" box is still
set to jpg, but when the file is save the file extesion
jpg is lost and I have to go and rename the file manually
adding the jpg extension.

Is ther a setting or solution so that I do not have to
manually add the file extension when renaming.

It seems that some file types do preserve the extsion and
others like jpg do not. Thanks

Hi

Try this:
Click Start > Control Panel > Tool > Folder Options >
View > Make sure that "Hide extentions for known file
types" is selected

I am not sure if this would help, but it might
