File menus missing in Explorer, no recycle bin, CP/maintenance empty

Hallo,
there are some elements missing in my XPe image (compared to XPSP2) that
i couldn't figure out so far. Maybe someone can help me out there.

- File menus (File, edit, view,...) are missing in explorer
- No recycle-bin on desktop
- Control Panel/Maintenance Folder is empty but 'services.msc' does work
from cmd.

Any ideas how to fix that?

You can try to build an XPPro like image. The template you can download from

I'm focusing on a 300MB image and i try to do it manually or at least
with standard macros. I'm on UpdateRollup1 and have included nearly all
'Explorer' components but the explorer still has no file menus. Many
pics i've found in the net show a 'normal' explorer with file menus so
it should be possible.

Try adding the following components:

Primitive: Browselc
Primitive: Browseui
Standard Start Menu Shortcuts

I don't have these two 'primitive components'. Are you sure they are
standard components? I have SP1, SP2, FP2007 and UpdateRollup1 installed.

Sorry, i forgot to lower component visibility. 'Primitive: Browselc' was
missing and menus show up properly now. Thanks.

Any suggestions how to add recycle bin and getting a filled
'maintenance' folder in 'control panel'?

Peter,

Did you set the"Show Desktop Icons" checkbox on "User Interface Core" component settings page?

Also, add "Administrative Support Tools" component.

Yes, both are set already. The control panel itself looks quite right
though (classic view). Its just the maintenance folder.

I'm currently starting from scratch again. I forgot to install
UpdateRollup1 and by upgrading components my project increased by 100MB.
To make sure this isn't a sideeffect of upgrading i restart from
scratch. This doesn't affect missing maintenance folder content.

Now I got the 'recycle bin'. "Shell Namespace Extensions" wasn't installed.

But the 'Administrative Tools' folder is still empty. Just a
'desktop.ini' in there but content like 'services.msc' is present. At
least it can be invoked by command shell.

Any ideas?

Some codepages or fonts were missing i think. Now, all is working.
