file menu fails to drop word 2000

Hi,
Word 2000 has suddenly refused to drop down the file menu. All the
other menus will scroll down but when I press down on the file menu
button ---nothing.
This started quit suddenly a few days ago. Have not installed any new
software.
I am using a old machine (PII 400 384mb ram) & win 98
Found nothing in forum search on this topic.

Anybody seen this? solution?

If you start Word from the START/RUN button with
winword.exe /a

do things behave correctly?
