I currently use xplorer2 lite which meets most of my file management needs.
But I would love one that includes a comment or description column along
the lines of 4-dos. I think only the paid xplorer2 does this.

Is there a comperable freeware file manager that includes a comment column?

My use for the column would be to describe the directories files in a
couple of understandable words, so I could launch or open selected files
directly from their directory.

I've never used the feature, but x^2 does allow for a comment
column.

Don't know of a freeware file manager that does this, but...

Another shareware app that allows 4DOS-type file descriptions/comments
is Total Commander, an excellent file manager with tons of addons
available.

Have you considered just going with 4DOS alone, since this is now
freeware?

In the last few months there were a couple of discussions on adding
comments/descriptions to files, either within a file manager type
software or with a standalone app. Check groups.google.com with above
keywords.
