File is missing\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32

I have loaded XP on to my hard drive on a seperate
partition creating a multi boot system with Windows ME.
All worked well for about a week and then on booting to XP
recieved the following message: Windows XP could not start
because the following file is missing or corrupt:
WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM: I repaired XP using the
original disc(as I could not log into recovery console)
and installed all the updates including SP2. Sorted I
thought but tonight the same error message but this time
on trying again managed to boot into XP OK! What is going
on - any ideas out there.
