"File is locked. In order to save changes..."

Hello!

I have an NT4 domain with some Excel files stored on the NT4 server. These
files are used by three different people, one running Windows Me (oh,
nooooo!) and two running XP Pro, all using Excel 2000 SP3.

When any one of the users attempts to open one particular file (even while
the others are not using it), they get an error stating "File is locked. In
order to save changes to the file, you can either close the file before
making any changes and then re-open it, use Save As (File menu) to save the
file using another name, or turn off Shared Workbooks and then save the
file." Shared Workbooks are NOT in use on this file. All workstations have
been rebooted after clearing their temp files.

Other files in the same folder with the same NTFS permissions work just
fine. Rebooting the server made no difference, and copying the file to the
Win98 local workstation on the LAN at work made no difference. I even
emailed the original file home and it does the exact same thing on my XP Pro
station using Excel 2002. I tried to turn on Shared Workbooks on my home
computer's copy of the file, then clear it, but now I get an error stating
"This file is locked. Try the command again later." I cannot get around that
error (on my system at home).

I am at a loss to figure out how to unlock this file. Please help! It has to
be some key within the file itself, since it does it on my workstation at
home with the emailed file.

Thank you!

Gregg Hill
