File gets password added after printing...automatically

K

Kim Nacrelli

Hello -

I am having a problem with Word assigning password protection to a file
without any intervention from me. It seems to usually occur after I print
the document, but then it stays on there forever, even if I remove protection.

Fortunately, it is assigning a password that I used for a previous document,
so I always know what the password is, but when I send documents to other
people it becomes a big problem to havea protected document everywhere.

Is there some setting that would be causing this to happen? I really need
to figure out how to make this stop. If anyone has any suggestions, I would
be very grateful :)

Thanks!!!

Word doesn't arbitrarily generate password protection, nor does printing a
document file.

Are you using the original password protected document [or its progeny] as a
"model" & doing a Save As to create the new files. That would explain it.
Otherwise this sounds like a bizarre new twist on an age old issue - you've
somehow managed to password protect your Normal template (or whatever
template the files are based on) so each new document you create is
inheriting the protection. You need to actually open the source file being
used as a basis for the new files & remove the password from it. If it is
your Normal.dotm template you'll find instructions here:

That's what I thought too...that it can't arbitrarily generate a password,
but it is. I just went through all Word templates (hidden included) on my
computer and none of them have password protection.

I am not doing a "save as" to get this problem. I can create an entirely
new document, or be sent a document from somewhere else (even another
company) and still have the same problem. Most of the time, this is how it
happens...
I open the Word doc and begin editing without a problem. I print the Word
doc (can be printed to Adobe or any of multiple printers) and then it
immediately is protected. I don't even have to close the document to get
this problem...it is literally immediately after I press the print button.
From that point on, that file is protected whenever I open it.

I know this sounds like the impossible, but I swear to you it's happening as
described. Does anyone have any other suggestions for this?

Thanks!

I certainly believe you, but I have no idea how it could happen. I've never
encountered anything of the sort.

I'm guessing that it could be some sort of a Windows Registry corruption or
something imposed by network configuration... but even that would be highly
unlikely if file level pw protection is being applied. Is it definitely
password protection or are the documents being set as "Read Only"?

The only other explanation I can offer is that you're the victim of a virus
or some other malware. I believe that's the first direction I would pursue -
perhaps one of the documents you received has embedded an auto macro.

It is definitely protection, and not "read only" because I can then click on
Tools/Unprotect, type in the password, and it's open again. But as soon as I
close it, without turning protection back on, that file will be protected
every time I open it in the future.

Is there a somewhat easy way to find documents with macros? That sounds
like a possibility, but it's impossible to check each document on our server
individually.

Thanks!

Ok...I just did a little experiment with one of the files to see what would
happen without macros enabled (it's a company template with many macros).

I opened the file, unprotected the file, changed the macro security to
prompt me when opening file, saved changes and closed file.
I then re-opened the file (disabling macros at prompt) and to my surprise,
it was not protected now. This is a start. So, going a step further, I
printed the document. Darn, now it's protected again. It definitely has
something to do with printing the file, but I jut can't figure out what.

See if there is a macro named FilePrint or FilePrintDefault listed under
Tools | Macro | Macros. If so, it's hijacking the Print command and doing
something (presumably protecting the document).
