File/folder properties cannot change from "Read Only"

All my files and folders have read only under properties. I click this box
to deselct the green button for read only. Then I hit apply. It goes thru
the folders, I assume taking care of the problem. Then hit OK and close.
When I reopen the folder properties it says read only again. Can't get rid
of this. The main my documents is shared on our network with the ability for
others to change files. How can I get these files/folders to be not read
only?

It is normal for folders in XP to be read-only and it is not the
problem, so perhaps you should concentrate on the files or how you are
sharing documents. XP Home does not have the file sharing capabilities
of XP Pro. Are you using XP Home?

I am using XP Pro. The problem is when the other person on the network tries
to access and modify the file. He gets the message that the file is read
only and he cannot modify it. When the sharing was set it included allowing
others on the network to modify the files.

That's a function of the sharing process. As well as allowing sharing,
u need also to tick the option "Allow network users to change my
files".

Somehow the brilliant answer was not answer. If you would read what I wrote
I said that along with sharing that I had specified [by ticking] that files
could be changed. However, the program seems to have a mind of its own and
makes the file read only!! Even unticking the read only does not effect the
change!!

So you did - my bad. Sorry.

Any help somewhere in this :
"How to configure file sharing in Windows XP"

Also, just a thought, I've found "un"setting the R/O properties
through a folder less than successful sometimes, for some reason, and
have to resort to individual file names. Just try one file, and see
how it goes on the network.
