Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types - type in question......
You can download a BAT file (zipped) that will restore all of the "default"
associations that XP ships with. It will not restore those file associations
created by 3rd party applications. The BAT file can be downloaded from
here:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_easy_file.htm
Another option:
Go to Start/Run/CMD and type in: assoc
Copy the line for the association you wish to restore. A Command Prompt
window will open. Right click in this Window and select Paste. Then press
Enter.
More info:
ASSOC [.ext[=[fileType]]]
..ext = Specifies the file extension to associate the file type with
fileType = Specifies the file type to associate with the file extension
Type ASSOC without parameters to display the current file associations. If
ASSOC is invoked with just a file extension, it displays the current file
association for that file extension. Specify nothing for the file type and
the command will delete the association for the file extension.

I have a file its a .bak file, Its a file for AutoCAD. I tried to open it
and Windows asked what program to use to open it with. I choose my AutoCAD
installaion and clicked OK. I forgot to Uncheck the box that says ALWAYS
USE THIS PROGRAM TO OPEN THIS TYPE OF FILE. Come to find out I need to
rename the file and NOT choose the program from the list, just needed to
rename the file to a .dwg extension. Now I cant do that and AutoCAD wont
open the file, it acts like it wants to but wont. What I need to know is
how to get back to the point that I was at before I selected a program to
use, Basicaly I want Windows to not know what to do with the file, LIke it
has no clue, so I can change the file extension and open it again.
