File explorer takes long time to change directory

Hello,

I am using Windows XP pro, Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop, Office XP. If I am
to open a file in any application (Office Excel, Word, etc) when I click on
a directory name, it takes sometimes seconds to change to selected
directory. So in order to open a file in a directory I need to wait a long
time before it opens. I clean the registry and defrag the disk often. So why
is it taking so long to open a file using windows Open file dialog? Any help
would be appreciated. Please help.

Control alt delete at the time of the delay will tell you what is running in
the background and sucking up your memory.

this is an observed behavour if you have windows 'zip' feature on by default
and the directory you are trying to open contains 'zip' files. By default
windows will directory list the contents of zip files. Disable this feature
(its somewhere on google)
