File deleted, space not free

My son tried to convert a DVD and when finished had an 8GB file left on
the hard drive which he does not need. He deleted it, not just into
the recycle bin, but permanently. However, the 8GB on the hard drive
does not show up as being free. The file is not in the original
location any more, and not in the recycle bin. Why doesn't XP see the
space it previously occupied as now free?

Thanks!

Is Norton System Works installed on your system? If so, look
into the Protected Recycle Bin. Also, see if the program your
son was using has a temporary holding area for files it's
working with.

If all that fails, run a search on your computer for files
based upon file size. See if there's a 8GB file hiding in a
place you wouldn't expect to find it.

Good luck

Thanks, that was it. Even though he said he chose to delete it
permanently because it was too big for the recycle bin, that computer
has the Norton Protected Recycle Bin and it was in there!

You're welcome.
