File backup option

J

JERRY

Usually most programs have a feature where there is a timed backup made of
each file you work on. The back up is saved in the directory or folder the
user chooses.

Tools/options/save seems not to produce the desired results where the
Autorecover save location I create is something like D:\Excel\backup, and
set for a specific number of minutes. Any help here would certainly be
appreciated

I have always had good success with this forum and thank any and all who
have provided solutions to my problems. I usually work for quite a while on
the problem to see if I can figure it out myself without troubling folks
here.

This is one I have wasted enough time on. It may not be a viable option in
excel.

Thank You
Jerry

It sounds like you're using xl2002+.

In xl2k and below, there was an addin named autosave that allowed you to do just
what you described. In fact, if you still have that addin, you can use it with
xl2002 and xl2003 (not sure about xl2007).

xl2002 replaced autosave with autorecover. This new feature was to recover data
if the system crashed (or excel crashed). Excel would notice that extra file
and offer to open it the next time you opened excel.

You may be interested in an addin that Jan Karel Pieterse (works in any version)
called AutoSafe (note
spelling).

It doesn't overwrite the existing workbook when it saves. It saves to a user
selectable folder. And when it's done, it either deletes these backups (or puts
them in the recycle bin). And the user can always restore the backups from the
recycle bin.

(look for AutoSafe.zip, not autosafeVBE.zip, for your purposes.)

Actually, I have the Office Excel 2003 version. Under Addins, it offers
seven options, but none are of the autosave variety.

Autosave came with excel versions xl2k and below.

If you have that version available, you may be able to go back and copy that
autosave.xla addin from that installation.

Gord Dibben posted this:

Autosave.xla from Office 2000 or 97 will work with Excel 2002 or 2003.
If you have a previous copy, move it to your Office\Library.
To download the 97 version see here........

But you may want to try Autosafe from Jan Karel, too.
