When setting full permissions for various shared folders in XP Pro, the
system resets the permission to Read Only as soon as the Permissions window
is closed.

This results in other users on the network being unable to edit files
directly from their terminals.

If one leaves the window in which one sets the Permission open, then those
permissions are effective until that window is closed.

All PCs are running Windows XP Pro with all the latest patches. Only one PC
exhibits this peculiar behaviour. I have checked the Security and Sharing
Permissions, and have given Administrative rights to the logged in user.

Sounds like you don't have the right to change access rights on that folder.
I'd either take ownership of it and change the rights appropriately, or move
all the contents to a new folder and create a new share on that folder,
configured as you want.
