How can I tell Internet Explorer that when I click on a link that is a .java file to open the file with TextPad.exe? It works on one of my computers, but not on the other. I can't find where to set file associations for Internet Explorer.

Select a file of the type, right click while holding down the shift key,
choose 'open with' when you have selected the correct program, check the box
bottom left to always use.

My file associations work fine everywhere except in Internet Explorer. In other words, I can double click on a .java file in a folder and TextPad will load properly, but when I click on a link in Internet Explorer which is a .java file, Textpad does not open the file. I get an Internet Explorer window showing the code. It works fine on my other computer (even in Internet Explorer - even on the same exact link). If I attempt to right click on the link with the shift key, I get the same thing as when I right click without the shift key and there is no "open with" option. So, I think your answer had to do with file associations in general - but the file associations for Internet Explorer must be set somewhere else, and in some way that I know nothing about.

Fixed it

Went to Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types. Scrolled down to JAVA and highlighted it. It said I had customized it to refer to TextPad. I clicked restore to set it back to the standard file type. I then got an "Advanced" button (where the restore button had been). When I clicked on the advanced button, I then clicked "add" and entered open for the action and then did a browse to point to Textpad.exe and also unchecked "Confirm open after download". It works fine now
