File Associations not working

The last 2 programs I installed, Winamp & WinZip, do not show up in the file
list when I try to associate the file extension to the program through My
Computer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types. When I browse for the program and
click open, (to associate it), I go back to the list but still don't see the
program, (and the file is still not associated). But if I launch the program
first, then open the file through the program, everything works fine. Is
there something in the registry that is preventing me from adding these?

Mike,

See if this program helps.

Registering a program with the "Open With" dialog:

I unzipped the app, (although since Win Zip also can't be associated, I had
to start WinZip first, then drag the file to it), and tried to run it but I
got a "Run Time Error 429. ActiveX component can't create object".

Mike,

That error means that the Windows scripting ActiveX control could not be
initialized in your system. FYI, OpenWithAdd.exe uses scripting runtimes in
the code.

Click Start, Run and type these commands:

regsvr32 wshom.ocx
regsvr32 scrrun.dll

Hi Ramesh,

I tried those two commands. both said "succeeded" but when I tried to run
your .exe file again, I still received the same message, "Run-time error
'429: ActiveX component can't create object". I'm running Widows MCE 2005. It
appears this problem started when I added user profiles. They all have admin
rights, but I noticed that I know don't have permission to edit some of the
registry entries, even if I try to change permissions. Could this be related?

Mike,

Yes. Incorrect permissions are causing the problem. You can try resetting
the registry permissions, using SubInACL utility.

See: http://www.google.com/search?&q=subinacl+reset+permission

That may perhaps fix the original problem as well.

Thanks Ramesh!
Resetting the permissions seemed to fix the association problem. The script
showed there were 2 failures but it doesn't seem to be causing any problems.

Would you help me with another problem? Installing subinacl.msi reminded me.
For the last few months, my CD drives take about 3 minutes to start up when
I try to install an application off of a cd. But music or data CD's start up
fine. I had the same problem with subinacl.msi which was stored on my hard
drive. My computer freezes up for the 3 minutes. After the 3 minutes, the
install program starts to run and my computer is back to normal.
Any ideas?

You're welcome Mike.

For the other problem, see if a clean boot troubleshooting helps (to isolate
the problem).
