File association mix-up for MP3

A

Andy

I have got my file associations in a mess.
The problem is to do with the default value.

To make changes I use:
Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types

If I set the default to my MP3 player (Foobar2000) then the context menu
for an MP3 file correctly shows "PLAY with Foobar2000" in bold.

However, if I set the default to my audio editor (WavePad) then the
context menu for an MP3 file wrongly shows "Notepad" in bold. And When
I double click an MP3 then Notepad tries to open it.

I have no idea where the reference to Notepad is coming from. I have
checked all the entries in File Types for MP3.

This is reversible and repeatable: if I go back and set Foobar as
default then all is ok.

What needs fixing?

FileExtInfo - View the association settings for a file type easily:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fileextinfo.htm

Generate a report for .mp3 file types. See if there are any references to
"Notepad.exe" in the file associations.

Hi Ramesh, thanks for the reply. I tried what you said but there
was no ref to "Notepad".

It seems as if some file or program did not get found and so the
system used a default.

How can I check this out?

What exactly do you do to change it. Instead of change click Restore.
