File Association - how to?

Under WinXP Pro, if I go to the Control Panel and double-click Folder
Options, absolutely nothing happens. What I need to do is to change what
program runs when a particular file is double-clicked. Everything was fine
(of course!) until I downloaded iTunes, which came with 'complimentary'
QuickTime, thank you very much. Now QuickTime runs instead of certain other
viewers, which used to open just fine. Particularly irksom is QuickTime
trying to display images from the US Patent Office... it just won't work, and
the special TIFF viewer specifically for this purpose seems lost forever.

One easy way to permanently change a file association is to right-click and
select "Open With...", select the program you want to use and click "Always
use the selected program to open this type of file".

i "had" to remove itunes because i
think it carried that "brilliantview" parasite,
not sure of the exact name. but windows
defender found it.

to remove the programs, scan the parasite
and modify the file association, you might
be better off doing all of the above in safe mode.

Boy, that was quick, thank you everyone for the tips. I did go into
QuickTime and uncheck ALL the boxes for what files it would open, but still
the big blue Q came up on the USPTO Webpage when I asked to see the patent
drawings. (No option to right-click on these and use 'Open With.') So I
removed QuickTime (70MB... bigger than my first hard drive!) and got my
AlternaTIFF viewer back. But I still cannot double-click Folder Options in
the Control Panel. Is there another way to get to the file association list?

Folder Options Solution :
From GPedit (WinXP) :
.... Click Start > Run
.... Type "gpedit.msc" (Without quotes)
.... Expand "Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer"
under User Congifuration
.... In right side, double click "Remove the Folder Options....." and set it
to Not Configured

From Regedit :
.... Click STart > Run
.... Type "regedit" (Without quotes)
.... Expand "
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer"
.... Right side, delete the item "NoFolderOptions" or set it to 0

Now, you should be able to open Folder Options. You can change the file
association easily by right clicking the file > Properties > Change

I feel so dumb! Clicking Folder Options does indeed open the window for
selecting and making changes, but it opens BEHIND the Control Panel screen
and, in fact, any other window that is open! I was getting ready to shut
down the computer and, lo and behold, there was the screen I was looking for,
the bottom layer against my Desktop. Oh, well, I didn't want QuickTime
anyway. Thanks again, all.
