Can anyone advise on how to set up file and printer
sharing between a laptop running Windows XP Professional
and a desktop running Windows 2000?

Alistair,

Here are several resources that contain all the information you need:
http://www.cablesense.com/
http://www.homenethelp.com/
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/

With Windows XP, here are a couple gotchas to avoid:
1) Make sure ICF is not enabled on the LAN that connects it to the
Windows 2000 computer. Un install all other firewalls too.
2) If using advanced file sharing (Windows 2000 compatible), be sure
to setup and use a common account / password on both computers.

Cheers,
Chuck
