It has taken me a while going back and forth between my installations but I
think I have now found the cause of this problem.

Old PST File format = 97-2002
Files created in XP with office 2003 with old format deliberately chosen.
Received error trying to open in vista with office 2007.
Test File created in XP with office 2003 with 2003 format chosen.
Received error trying to open in vista with office 2007.
Test file created in Vista with office 2007 with 2007 format chosen.
Did not receive error trying to open in XP with office 2003.

Looked at security settings for Old Files and 2003 and 2007 format files and
found the discrepency.

Vista with Office 2007 added the user account to the privilegies list which
included users and administrators.
XP with Office 2003 didn't add the specific user account (although it might
have been different) but would have thought the administrator access would
let my account have access as it is also an administrator account.

Next stage is to try and see if I can add my specific user account to the
list of privileged users.

Sure, that will work but what are you trying to prove here? In a dual boot
configuration you always have to deal with permissions on files. That is not
limited to Outlook files but any other file that you create. In those
configurations it is best to create a folder on a separate partition and set
the correct permissions on that folder.

Thanks for the quick reply. Not trying to prove anything here was just
offering a solution that may help others that were in a similar situation to
me.

So far I have only had this problem with files being used in Outlook 2003 on
XP and Outlook 2007 on Vista. The files are in a central place accessible
by both systems and are always closed when leaving Outlook on either system.
However, I can open Word/Excel documents in Word/Excel 2007 on Vista and
Word/Excel 2003 on XP with no restrictions even though the word files don't
have my specific user account listed for privilege access and were created as
long as 2 years ago on Word/Excel 2000 on XP. This then brings the thought
that it is a restriction in Outlook itself that is causing the problem
(although technically it isn't a problem per se) and not just something that
happens with a dual boot system. Sounds like an extra test is being made that
other Office programs do not have.

Now that I have added my specific user account to the email pst files I can
open them which is good news as I can now check emails regardless of which
operating system I am using at the time.

Xrystal,

I am having the same issues you had...trying to import my old email from my
laptop (Outlook 97, XP) into my new desktop (Outlook 2002, Vista). I Used
export to file to export the PST, then import in new Outlook...but keep
getting File access is denied et al! I did not understand your resolution.
Can you please explain how you accomplished this?

Thanks!

did you ever try just plain copying the .pst file with Outlook closed and opening it in Outlook on the new computer? Amazing results - everything is where it is supposed to be!
