Figure inserted before a caption reference in text - Word 2007

A problem has crept into my Word 2007 document where a figure image is
inserted before any caption reference to that figure. This occurs on all
references to all figures. If I go through and delete these extra images,
they all show up again after a save file and subsequent editing. Why is this
happening? Is there a setting to prevent it? Thanks in advance.

Could it be that the Style used for the captions has been modified to include
this mysterious image?
