figure cross reference

Is it possible to use
Insert/Reference/Cross-reference.
To insert a figure cross reference that will show up as:
"Fig 1"

As apposed to
"Figure 1"

Currently I'm inserting a caption with the Label "Figure"
and I do not check the "Exclude label from caption" box.
I've tried that and then tried inserting the Cross-
reference, but this still puts in the "Figure 1" reference.

Insert > Reference > Caption > New Label (create the label Fig).
Fig will be added to the list.
(Fig.) may be more appropriate with the stop to indicate the abbreviation!
