I inserted a figure and added a caption, then continued typing. As I did my
figure and caption moreoften than not were on separate pages, so to lock them
together I put them in a text box. However, captions in text boxes aren't
included in the tables of figures, so I converted the text box to a frame.
But when microsoft says that conversion to a frame may affect formatting they
mean it.
How do I keep captions with figures and still make a tble of figures?

Instead of putting the figure and caption in a text box and converting it to
a frame, try inserting a frame from the outset. Select the figure and
caption and use the Insert Frame button on the Forms toolbar. You'll need to
remove the default border (click No Border on the Borders toolbar flyout),
and you can right-click on the frame border and choose Format Frame to
fine-tune placement.

You don't say what the problem was with the converted frame. There are
several ways of keeping the caption and figure together - for instance:

Put both the caption and the figure into a frame as you have done. You might
find you get better results if you insert a frame rather than a text box to
start with - the command is on the Forms toolbar. Alternatively you can fix
the formatting of the frame to suit what you want. Note that you can make a
frame part of a paragraph style - and provided the caption and figure styles
are based on the same framed style they will share the same frame.

Put the caption into a frame and anchor it to the in-line graphic. Lock the
anchor. This is useful if you have captions in the margin, for instance.

Use a floating graphic or a graphic in a frame and anchor it to the caption.
Lock the anchor.

Use "keep with next" on the first of the two paragraphs. If you can put up
with captions *above* both figures and tables you can add this to the
caption style. Otherwise you'll have to set it on the style you use for the
captioned graphic.
