Field Codes Calculation issues

I am attempting to add 4 field codes to get one total using an if,then
equation.
I have marked each to calculate on exit, I have entered the equation
manually using the Ctrl + F9, I have used the available tools menu option to
create it, I have tried to duplicate everything I did in a previous attempt
at a similiar situation, I have deleted and added spaces, commas, brackets,
quotes, etc all to no avail.
It does not display either the true or false expression. It either displays
nothing or it reads Syntax Error or Missing Operator.
What step did I miss? or Add?

Note that if you are creating a complex (nested) field instruction, you
cannot enter it via a dialog box. Instead, you have to press Ctrl+F9 to
create the delimiters for each field, and type in the instructions.
Press Alt+F9 to show/hide field codes. Press F9 to update.

What field code are you currently using?

Yea I tried that (sorry that's what I meant when I typed Ctrl +F9 in my
question).
What I finally ended up doing was to put my information into a table and
using the available program functions entered an equation using the cell
markers and setting the formatting. That finally worked.
However, I saved it as a protected form and linked it to my intranet site
via FrontPage and it opens unprotected - so if you can tell me why it did
that and how to fix it - I sure would appreciate it.
Look forward to hearing from you,
Have a great day!
