Hello,
I have recently installed Vista Ultimate x64 and am facing a few problems.
I'm a programmer and web developper I'll try to explain them the best I can
what my problems are. Thanks in advance for your consideration.
What I did:
1. I did a clean install of Vista 64 on a multi partitioned hard drive
(machine specs below);
2. Many drivers have been hard to find, but the ones that weren't installed
automaticly, I could find working ones available on the web;
3. Updated Vista from Windows Update (so I have full version);
4. Installed all my programs. Here is a list of the haviest ones (all that
was installed was LATEST VERSIONS)...
NOD 32 (uninstalled right after)
Kaspersky Internet Security
Delphi 2007
Delphi for PHP
Macromedia Dreamweaver
Apache 2.2 webserver (automatic service)
Oracle Express 12g (automatic service)
Bullet Proof FTP Server
VM Ware
Nero (the whole bundle)
Adoble PhotoShop
3D Studio Max
Sound Studio
Applied about 20 sidebar items (some downloaded, some came included
and some are just instances of the same item)
RegistryEasy
Many other small applications ....
5. Upgraded my 1Gb x 2 DDR2 667mhz memories to 2Gb x 2 DDR2 800mhz memory
cards (total now is 4 GB)
6. Upgraded my onboard Intel 946gz video card to NVidia 7200 video card
Problems I found:
1. Before start installed all the applications, I noticed that start up was
way faster. I still have only 2Gb of ram, but it would boot in less than 2
minutes after windows update. Now, after all programs were installed, it
took about 9 minutes before memory upgrade and 7 mins after I put the 4 Gb.
So my 1st questions are: Is 7 minutes to start up a normal timing for such a
configuration? Is there any program I could use to optimize it?
2. I could not find any drivers for my onboard sound card to run properly on
64-bits OS's. But I think it's a Intel problem, not Vista's
3. Before upgrading memory, I oftenly saw what seemed to be lack of memory
problems, like pop up menus wouldn't show up, so I had to mouse over the
empty space so I could see their items, etc. Since main board has only two
slots and I can't find memory cards higher than 2Gb each (I don't think my
board will support more than that), Is there a way to satisfy Vista's hunger
for memory? Is that enough for the programs I use to run?
4. Free space on partition left for Vista has decreased after memory
upgrade. I know it has increased its cache to adapt to the new amout of
memory that I have, but is it safe to manually reduce the cache? I know
300Gb should be enough, but I do have some large files stored in here and
disk space is a problem for me. Also I could use the option to use a SD chip
as TurboCache. I tried that before, but I didn't see any improvement in
performance. Should I try it again after memory upgrade and would it help
performance?
5. After install and run Registry Easy, it found about 9000 problems and
fixed them. So, is that for real? Just after installing Vista and programs I
should really have all these errors? Do these registry patchers really work?
Is there an equivalent made by MS?
6. One of the problems I found with using Registry Easy is that it enters
some kind of a loop in a registry key located in HKLM\System\Sys64Wow\ ...
it seems to enter in a loop and it keeps showing SCANNING
HKLM\System\Sys64Wow\Sys64Wow\Sys64Wow\Sys64Wow\Sys64Wow\ .... and so on
..... Is it safe to delete this branch? Could it be a virus or something? If
it's a bug, is it known by MS? Maybe a fix?
My PARTITION specs:
FAT16 PRIMARY BOOTABLE ACTIVE (for bootmagic and win 3.11, I'm nostaugic at
times, also for some old DOS games)
NTFS PRIMARY BOOTABLE (for Vista Ultimate 64bits)
NTFS PRIMARY BOOTABLE (for XP Corporate 64 bits)
NTFS EXTENDED (for Program Files, I normally install programs in a shared
location to multiple OS's, just to save disk space)
NTFS EXTENDED (for Games, Flight Simulator, Age Of Empires, ....)
NTFS EXTENDED (for Media, this is where I keep my source codes and projects
and documents and pics and other personal files)
Ext2 EXTENDED (for Linux Ubuntu, I am curious about this one, and, despite
of most MS OS's, this one can boot up from an EXT partition)
NTFS EXTENDED (for VMWare disk images, I need to have Win95 and XP 32
installed for testing purposes with my programs)
My HARDWARE specs:
1.8 ghz Intel Core2 Duo processor
Intel 946gz (sound, video, network cards onboard)
320Gb Sata2 HD
LG DVD Burner
30 Gb IDE HD (connected as master together with DVD burner, for partition
backup only)
Before: 2 x 1Gb DDR2 667ghz RAM (total: 2 Gb)
After: 2 x 2Gb DDR2 800 ghz RAM (total: 4 Gb)
Before: Onboard Video card (64mb)
After: NVidia 7200 (128mb onboard, up to 512 TurboCache)
ENLTV TV Card
Sound Maker (extra sound card)
7.1 USB Sound card (another extra sound card, yeah, I need 3 of them) (this
is a cheap and excelent card, I recomend to you all)
Multi Card Reader (connected to USB)
HP Scanner USB
HP Printer USB
