Fax & Scan

I'm using Vista Ultimate with Fax and Scan. It won't recognize my Canone
LIDE 30. All of my other programs that use the scanner do recognize it.

I am looking for a sure thing ... a scanner that will work with Ultimate's
Fax and Scan. I have heard that MS dropped TWAIN for this product and uses
a different methodology.

I did have a network All In One but had nothing with problems using it with
Vista. So now I'm thinking I'll just connect a scanner to the computer.

I tried other software but I received a message that it couldn't access the
modem because it was in use by another program ( not the case ).

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Fax account ?

The net message boards have a lot of people reporting problems with Fax and
Scan not recognizing scanners that otherwise are seen by all other programs.
The consensus was that MS had abandoned TWAIN in this process and used a
different protocal.

I've looked at scanners and none of them discuss their compatibility with
Vista.

I had an all in one on my network but Vista had fits with it. My
experiences were the same as other reported incidents ... dropping the
recognition of the printer, spooler failure, etc. My XP machine never has a
problem with it. However, the scanner started jamming in the AIO so I
decided to just use my computer for faxing.

It will allow me to create a fax, but it won't allow me to scan with Fax and
Scan. I don't want alternative software ... so I'd rather invest in a
scanner that will absolutely work and I don't want it in an AIO. My primary
printer on this machine is a color laser.

Thanks.

MS went to WIA with Windows ME
http://www.scanhelp.com/ScanEdu/wiascanners.html

What is WIA?

Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) is a new standard for scanner drivers to
be written. The standard that has been custom for so long was the TWAIN
standard. But Microsoft introduced WIA drivers in Windows ME. WIA
provides developers with a relatively easy way to write support for
scanners.

That list is old, and no one publishes that they are WIA compliant. So I'm
having a very difficult time finding a scanner anywhere that will work in
this situation.

You would think it would at least be noted on the manufacturers website if
their scanners have WIA drivers ... but I looked at most, and it doesn't
show.

I'm still looking for recommendations from people who use Fax & Scan and
have a scanner they can use.

Thanks.

I answered my own question because no one else could ! I hope this is
helpful to others.

I contacted MS and they told me they had no list of scanners that work with
Fax and Scan.
I checked every common scanner and none of them specify being WIA compliant
I called / chatted / emailed many scanner companies but none knew the
answer. Typically sales sent me to tech support who sent me back to sales.

Finally, with a money back guarantee, I bought an HP Scanjet G4010. It
works. I don't know how well it will do with color, or if it will fight my
other programs, but at least its working with Fax and Scan !

It was available off the shelf at my local office supply store. Of course,
they didn't know if it would work or not
