something to keep in mind
is that msfax is basic and
a convenience.
i don't use the automatic
answering feature but maybe
some of my thoughts below can
be of some help.
for one thing i have found
external modems and
pci modem cards to be more
accomodating especially since
they include specialty faxing
software and drivers.
I think modems like from
Creative Labs include a program
that has faxing and voice mail
capabilities.
in any case and back to your issue -
i'd try setting the rings to 6 or more,
because the processor may need to
have more time to monitor and initiate the
reception of data as a high priority.
Simply, your processor may be too busy
to answer the call and basically requires
your help to manually answer it.
also, your firewall may be preventing
the call from coming through.
maybe the modem you have
has additional software available
either from the modems website
or from your computers website that
is more powerful that MSFax.
a final thought look into something
referred to as strings settings you
can use to force/override the device:

I have now tried 3 computers to try to get the fax consol to answer. It just
sits there, even when set to answer on 0 rings. I can't find anything on
this in the help file. restarting does not work.
I can plug in a phone and have a dial tone, and can answer manually. But
automatic is nothing.
What is the magic bullet that makes it answer?
