Favourites

is there a way to copy and save the favourites file, so
that I can access this from a remote computer

Start>search for files or folders and use Favorites (No "U") for the search.
There may be more than one if you have had more than one user set up.

They are just links in an ordinary folder so you can simply copy that. I
usually right click when I find the right one and add a desktop shortcut.
You get a better choice of "Sorting" options that way... by name or date etc
by clicking on the gray column headers. You can't do that from "Inside" IE.

If you wanted to actually replace the existing folder on a new machine you
could search for it and when found simply copy your portable one to it, but
to avoid disturbing the other machine simply click on the items in the copy,
they will work just the same.

If you wanted to synchronise two networked machines you could use a utility
like filesync.
