I run W2KP-SP4 on this client and W2KS-SP4 on the PDC. I
have been trying to figure out how to speedup roaming
profile logons over a wireless LAN. I have succeeded in
mapping
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Explorer\User Shell Folders\Application Data to an
accessible folder on the PDC.

Together with enabling the Exclude Directories in Roaming
Profile policy and adding Application Data to the default
list of excluded folders my roaming profile logon time is
down to ~2 minutes.

But I wanted more speed, so I tried to map the profile's
Favorites folder. This is where my troubles began. I
found that when I logged on as the user in question the
Favorites folder had been moved to C:\WINNT\Favorites and
the favorites were missing. Since then I have tried to
return to the conditions before I mapped the Favorites
folder. Here is what I have discovered:

The original Favorites key configuration was
Key - Favorites
Data Type - REG_EXPAND_SZ
Value - %USERPROFILE%\Favorites

Now the Favorites key configuration is
Key - Favorites
Data Type - REG_SZ
Value - C:\WINNT\Favorites

I don't know how to correct this condition. I would
really appreciate some help on this. I would also
appreciate a pointer to a good reference that explains why
the Favorites folder can/cannot be mapped.

Hello,

I have this very problem currently : for some users, me included, the
Favorite key configuration sticks to C:\WINNT\Favorites and, whatever
changes I make in the registry, gets back to C:\WINNT\Favorites.
Never mind, I figured it out.

So, how did you manage to get it back to something usable ?

Hello,

I, too, have run into this problem. Every time I change the registry
key back to %userprofile%\favorites it simply reverts itself to
C:\winnt\favorites.

What was your solution?

Thanks!

Yay! I figured it out on my own anyway!

Definitely no thanks to anyone on this site. Not even 1 reply or
email! Nice.

If you'd like the solution to this problem:

Your favorites location has changed within the registry keys, and every
time you change them, they change back.

Look under Windows Issues/ Windows 2000 Issues and make sure your
cutoff date says "from the beginning".

Take care!
