Favorites invisible in IE7

I have just started using a new PC with Vista on it. It is running
IE7.0.6001.18000. Everything works so far, except for the "Favorites"
pull-down menu. When I click on it, I can see the right and bottom edges of a
transparent box open up below it. But there is nothing visible in the box.
And if I move my mouse down into the box and click, it is clear that there
are favorites there, since they do open things (either sub-boxes or web
pages), but since I cannot see any text at all in the box, I have no idea
what is going to open, and I have no way to save new favorites in a way that
I can see them.

All of the other pull-down menus (File, Edit, View, Tools, and Help) work
normally. This problem only exists with the Favorites menu.

What do I do to fix this?

I had no idea what you meant by the "star" option, but when I looked I found
the star and the double star. These options do work. So there is a
workaround, but the problem with the pull-down menu persists.

Try moving all your favourites out into another folder. Users / your id /
favorites. Then add add something to your empty favorites normally. If you
have no problems you have an item in your old favorites folder that is
causing the problem.

I moved everything out of the favorites folder (all that was there was what
Dell put there before I received the PC). But the Favorites pull-down menu
still has the same problem: it is invisible, except for the right and left
shadows.
