Using XP MCE and IE6. Today I made some changes in System/Properties/Advanced
Visual Effects tab and started messing around with Custom. Didn't like what I
saw, so went back to the default, Let Windows Choose...
When I went back to the desktop, many of the favorite icons that I had for
some websites I go to frequently reverted back to the IE big e.

Tried putting the sites in Favorites. Each site's icon appears in the
Favorites list but when I try to send them or drag them out to the desktop as
a shortcut, the e appears on the desktop, not the favicon. Why? what' the fix?

Favicons are kept in the Temporary Internet Files directory and that is
why they disappear. See this link for how to keep them:

favourite icons (line 108, right column)

Hello again, Malke. I had this problem with my old computer on which I had
installed IE7. The new computer thankfully has IE6. I remember the site you
reference and have re-printed the readme file so I can once again get my
favicons nicely protected, as you helped me do the last time.
Thanks so much. Mike

I'm glad that sorted it for you. Thanks for taking the time to post back.

I don't know if it is my newsreader or what, but I didn't get the post where
the site for fixing icons was posted. Just that Mike F from TN found it
again. If you would please post the site once again, I'd surely appreciate
it.

Thanks.

Hi Malke, sorry about this but now I have a related problem:
When I booted up this morning, the old e's were back. I'm sure there's a fix
but have no idea where to fine it. Mike

I've never used any of the favicon-save programs because it just isn't
something I care about. So I don't know what they change. However,
perhaps this isn't a favicon problem. In your first post, you said you
were messing around with some display properties and that the icon issue
appeared right afterwards.

Maybe this solution by MVP Ramesh is the correct one:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/htmicon.htm - Incorrect or generic Windows
icon displayed for HTM and MHTML files

Or maybe the easiest thing to do is a System Restore to before you
changed stuff.

I understand, Malke. Will go to Ramesh's site if I have to, but I also check
with an MVP who may be able to help me on this one. It looks like Ramesh's
site is focused on the IE icon, not favicons. The other thing is, I don't
know if my favicons are HTM or HTML or MHT. I agree with you that it must be
something in my setup that's doing this, so will just be patient and keep
watching the newsgroup. Thanks again. Mike
