Favicon Question

Tom Grassi

One more thing.

Some sites you get this page cannot be found but they still have a favicon
when you save the favorite. I displayed the files in the temp interenet
folder and I do not find any favicon(1).ico etc.

How can I save this type of icon?

thanks

Tom

Hi Tom :)

Take a look at the information here about Favicons:
And for more information on favicons, how they work, how web site authors
use them, etc.
http://www.favicon.com/index.jsp?id=Internet+Explorer

Here are two free utility programs that will help save and organize your
FavIcons and Favorites, courtesy of Jim Byrd:
FavIconizer
http://www.codeproject.com/tools/faviconizer.asp?target=favicons I've used
this and it's quite good,. It will actually find about a third more than
FavOrg does (since it checks for referenced URL's), but lacks some of the
other cababilites of FavOrg, Recommended. (Warning, however - it's verrry
slow compared with the others.)

FavOrg:
You can get the Version 1.4 here:

or Version 1.2 here:

Why does some web sites favicon show only a RED X?

check http://www.discovercard.com/favicon.ico

then when you try to show picture it does not change.

Other sites http://www.officemax.com/favicon.ico
then when you try to show the picture it displays thats good but when you
save it to your desktop and try to add to the properties it says that no
icons are in the file.

So what does the RED X mean?

Could be many reasons. The Favicons are stored in the Temporary Internet
Files (TIF) and disappear when they expire out of TIF or TIF is cleared. It
could be that the image that is the Favicon is being blocked by some 3rd
party software or your security settings, or it may be a .tiff, which IE
does not support, etc.

Courtesy of Frank Saunders -

Icons are temporarily stored in a file called iconcache.dll, You might try
deleting this file and restart your computer, Windows should automatically
rebuild the iconcache.dll on reboot. Be sure to make a backup copy just in
case.

Hope this helps.

Hello Tom,
Why does some web sites favicon show only a RED X?

First, not all Web sites have favicons and second, not all Web sites store
them at their default location (/favicon.ico).

The favicon is stored at
http://www.discovercard.com/discover/data/favicon.ico

do not have a favicon.
So what does the RED X mean?

File not found.

If you like favicons I recommend trying my Quero Toolbar which is an address
bar replacement with favicon support.
