fault in Windoiws XP when trying to activate/set up downloaded f i

XP Professional with SP2 installed (not downloaded). Windows Repair facility
has been tried to no avail.

In Windows Explorer when trying to activate 'set up' for a downloaded file,
the set up screen appears briefly and then disappears (before I have time to
activate it). This happens also when trying to activate a program from disc.

Similarly When carrying out some searches, IE6 shuts down for no apparent
reason.

Since Windows has just been installed, I suspect there is a setting
somewhere which needs 'tweaking', but I do not know where to look.

Please can anyone help?

There is no "tweaking" needed on an XP install out of the box. Something is
wrong. If you literally just installed this operating system (like today or
yesterday), it probably isn't infected. After you installed XP, did you
then install the drivers for all your hardware? If not, that's your next
step.

If you need further help, then please clarify exactly what you did regarding
the installation, the drivers, if the machine is an OEM box (HP, Dell,
etc.), and the recent history of the computer. This would include what
caused you to do a clean install of Windows. All of that will help us focus
the troubleshooting.

Right click the icon and "unblock" it.
