is it possible to convert an existing drive to NTFS
without damaging the data or does it have to be
reformated?

Yes you can convert it, look at the "Convert" command.

The process is supposed to be quite safe. However, I personally suggest
taking a backup of any vital data before performing this or any other
similar major operation. Its far better to have a un-needed backup than it
is to have no files and regrets.
