Fast Ethernet LAN Cable Connection

Trying to set up a direct cable connection between my 2 computers
Both computers are fully working and both are Intel Pentium P4 with plenty
of RAM and hard drive space,

The 1st. Computer (Host) is connected via ADSL to the internet and the
Network adadter is a VIA VT 6105 Rhine III Fast Ethernet Adapter(no
indicatedproblems in System Devices)
The Client Computer is not connected to the internet (I require Internet
sharing , File and Printer sharing facilities) and its Network Adapter is a
SiS 900-BasedPCI Fast Ethernet Adapter

Even though I connect the (CAT) to both computers using the RJ 45 connectors
both computers indicate in the toolbar that 'A Network Cable is unplugged'

Would appreciate any help

Many thanks

1) Buy yourself a router
2) plug the ADSL into the router
3) plug the two pcs into the router so they can access the internet
4) create a workgroup and share files via the network connections wizard.

thats what I have done and I can share files, internet and printers.

Connecting two computers directly to each other, without using a hub
or switch, requires a crossover CAT5 cable. A regular CAT5 cable won't
work, and both computers will report that it's unplugged.

Crossover cables are available at computer and office supply stores.

Thanks Steve

It appears that I purchased the wrong cable as the one sold to me was a
coaxial.
I will purchase the CAT5 Twisted and try again

Many thanks for your help

You're welcome.

I haven't seen a network using coaxial cables in years. Who sold you
a coaxial cable?

Be sure to get a crossover CAT5 cable.
