Far Cry

Game is kid stuff, but I'm using it as a bench mark
to see what will run it. So far every single card I've
tried has failed to run Far Cry in "Medium" mode
.... that is, with all 8 settings at "medium". I've tried
ATI 9600XT, ATI RADEON 9200, Nvidia 5600,
generic Intel, Matrox G550 ( heh! ), and I've gotten
"device failure / reboot" on every single one. Will
anything out there actually run Far Cry in "High" mode?
All of those cards were in P4s with at least 500 meg
ram. In looking at the game, I rate it as "sucky kid
stuff arcade shooter". I mean they left out things like
if you fire into the water, there is no splash from the
bullet. Gee .. come on! MOHAA beats the absolute
crap out of that game for just being a good game.
CoD is equally good with super graphics. So, I'm
wondering if Far Cry is just so poorly written that is
the reason it is failing ?? I read that it fails on ALL
the ATI cards. It fails on the Nvidia 5600 too.

Not sure how to do the benchmarks but using Fraps, I get about 34fps when
looking down over the island and about 60fps looking at a wall. This is on
an Athlon XP at 10 x 202 (2020MHz) and a 128Mb ATI 9800 pro. All settings in
the game set to medium.

I agree, the game is crap compared to CoD. Don't know how it managed to get
such a good review.

Runs fine with a 9600 Pro on medium settings, see plenty of splashing
water. Perhaps you are an idiot?

Yes, it does have that unique smell about it.

Of course, the Far Cry programmers were clever enough to
turn off eye-candy on crappy cards, so that the frame-rate
would still be good. Maybe that is what is making these idiots
confused. They should go back to hanging out with their
moron friends playing the Xbox or PS2.

P4 3.06Ghz, ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, 1GB of RAM works fine with medium textures
and everything else on high/ultra high. There are plenty of bullet splashes
in the water, so you probably turned it off.

If you think that CoD has better graphics then Far Cry, then you need to put
away the crack pipe (I mean the 2km viewing distance alone is very cool).
The AI in Far Cry beats anything I've seen so far in a game. CoD did have an
unbeatable atmosphere, however.

I think you need to reinstall some drivers on your computer.

I just finished the entire FarCry game (single player). Have to give credit
where credit is due - great game.

Graphics range from average to exceptional. AI, controls, physics,
environment, object interaction, etc are quite good. Audio is average.
Character and story development is more subjective, personally, I thought it
was alright. I have no experience with the game editor but I have heard good
things...time will tell with the mod community...

Although the storyline in linear, the "free-roam" outdoor environments allow
a lot of flexibility for strategy and methods. For example, you may have to
get from A to B but you often have many options such as taking a vehicle,
boat, swim, walk/run, etc and chosing the path -thru the jungle, -follow a
road, -swim, etc. Add in your choice of style (agressive, stealth, etc) and
weapon selections and you have room for many unique gameplay experiences.

I have also played COD start to finish and concur its an excellent game.
Haven't tried MOHAA yet....might have to look into this.

IMO FarCry has raised the bar as did COD. Given that SO many crap games are
released every year we need to give credit where credit is due.

Fully agree... I'm only on the early levels of Far Cry but its not bad at all!
very nice. I thought COD was also very good indeed. IMO MOHAA and the likes of
RTCW were the games that set the benchmarks for the others to achieve or better.
May not be quite so graphically pretty it is still a good game and well worth
playing.. I'm looking forward to their new MOH Pacific release which should be
anytime now I think. I suppose it depends on what type of game genre one likes!

OK. I'll do it ... $$$ ... but somehow !!! I've got a new
9600 to test right now. Professor has a big grin on his
face about it ... came with "Mutha Trucker". That is
hilarious. I like Mutha. Think I'm gonna be "Cleatus".
I mean, how many teeth does a person really need?
Actually got through the Far Cry demo. It is not too
bad once you get over grabbing for the "save game"
key. Looks good even in Low mode.

The game has really got potential. It is like BF1942 .. still just an
arcade shooter, but the machines are interesting. The water in
Far Cry is the best thing about it. I've been swimming around the
islands, and listening to the jungle birds. To heck with shooting
helpless dark shadows. Wish I could reduce all weapons to
kicking and biting. The close up AI is great, but I figured out
right away to sit off shore in a gun boat and wipe the place.
Other problem is the "enemy" won't chase you very far at all.
So the strategy is to stay just out of range, and they are like
shooting fish in a barrel. That needs work. But the water is
neat, and I like driving the gun boats. Have to go exploring
more in the demo.

Johns,

I would advise the whole game. Without giving too much away those islands
are a little like the ones from Doctor Moreau - there's more than
mercanaries after you. You'll also find that if you sit off-shore in the
boat the merc's will soon take you out with a missile.

I'm running it with a XP2800+ on an NF7-S (2) with 1 gig 3200 RAM and a
Sapphire 9600 pro. You can put the settings for water on highest and swim
with fish. The lighting is good too - shoot a flourescent light fitting and
it will swing with the shadows dancing around you - very realistic. Some
folk have had issues with graphics but I havent - I'd guess you really need
that 1gig RAM. I have had the occasional sound glitch (onboard soundstorm)
but I'm expecting the next patch to correct that.

Shaun.

Hmmm if I shot a light fitting with a gun and it just *swung* I'd be very
concerned I didn't have enough fire power! ;o)

Very good game though best thing I've played in a long time but really
looking forward to S.T.A.L.K.E.R ...

What about joystick support? Or... maybe someone can point me to a FC site
that has console commands.
Some games support a joystick fully, some, like Call of Duty support it, but
forward, back and strafe are not progressive (just on/off like the
keyboard). With some games you choose joystick in the menu, others need a
console command like "in_joystick=1". And of course, some don't support it
at all.

Ok, so I want to throw something very odd about Far Cry at you (slightly off
topic though). Yup its a thoroughly brilliant game, with more eyecandy than
anything else I've seen and thats at1024x768 with all settings at their
highest, mostly ultra high inc AA & AF and I can still get 50+ FPS (Athlon
XP3200+/400, DDR3200 Dual Channel, and Radeon 9800XT).

My comment though concerns the sound quality. On the early levels I tried
hardware/EAX2 sound, and to be honest it was awfull so I switched back to
the software mix. However playing around, I recon the sound on the later
levels works with the EAX far better making it worthwhile to use. Seems
odd, but anyone else care to comment?
