Fan won't stop, won't Standby

Hi All:
I have a Dell Dimension B110 with Windows XP SP2 Home Ed. (factory
installed) that is 4 months old (out of warranty). The Standby feature
worked fine until a few days ago. Now the computer won't go to Standby mode
and the fan runs continually. Will this hurt the computer? Is there a fix
for the problem? I didn't make any changes to the computer that I am aware
of prior to the problem. I have since added Spybot and Ad Aware. Have run
both and deleted some spyware and have run Symantec Antivirus with no
problems found. The problem still exists. The monitor will shut down OK but
nothing else. I have tried resetting the times in Control Panel - Power
Options and also with Control Panel - Display. I can't restore to an earlier
point either because all of my earlier restore points were erased. I tried
using System Restore but got an incomplete restore error. Once I ran Spybot
and clean out the spyware it found, System Restore now works OK but all of my
earlier points are gone. Any suggestions on how to correct the Standby and
fan problem? Thank you in advance for your input.

Hi,

I work in the IT field and we have experienced some issues with some of
the Dell models and one of symtoms is the Fan continuosly running.
These pc's were right out of the box or maybe used for a few months
and the issue was the Motherboards capacitors were exploiding.
Anyway if the fan is continuosly running there is a deeper underlying
problem, possibly the processor is heating up. Does your pc give any
error message such as "Thermal event errors" at boot up or shut down?
Does the computer shut down on its own or when you command it to shut
down.
You may want to contact Dell although this is not the model we had
problems with. The fan is used for cooling it should not run constantly
unless something is over heating.
