Buy a new fan?
It sounds like overheat protection is shutting down the pc

New fans are under $5. Processors are a lot more expensive.

Yes, but since this is a laptop the OP will probably not be able to replace
the fan herself. She should contact Dell tech support.

Nice Catch, I missed the "Inspiron" part myself. As hot as those
1000 series Inspirons' are, I wouldn't turn the thing on at all if the
exhaust fan isn't spinning.

I didn't notice it was a laptop. Yes, I agree, she should.

Replace the bad fan.

Hi !
Since one of the Dell Techs made an in-home visit to replace my Inspiron's
display, I have removed the battery based on a belief that it will last
longer due to most product's "Shelf Life" being longer than their
"Operational Life". Now however, a question has come to mind about which
electrical supply does the fan operate off of. I haven't noticed whether or
not the fan still cycles now that I've removed the battery. Does anyone know
for certain when it runs and how it's powered ??? I've also noticed that the
front-left corner of the PC gets pretty hot after several hours of use; so I
put the PC into "Hibernate" mode after 4 hours of so. Any ideas on how this
will affect my PC's life span ??? Thank You all for any input ! Ed VA

Can you tell me how and where to access and run the diagnostic to check the
fan's operation ? Thank You !

Dell's built-in fan control is for lack of a better term - pretty bad.
The thresholds and Rotational speed are inadequate to keep a
notebook cool. Here is a program written specifically to give a
Dell owner more control of the fan operation on their notebook.

Here's the website - be sure to read the Documentation.

Its open to Q as to whether removing a battery will prolong its life.
Some Laptops require the battery to be connected, removing and running on
pwr can cause problems on these.
I have just been reading an article on battery life, it was suggested that
the life might be 'enhanced' by occasionally running on battery down to
about 40% then recharging.
The Laptop manu's here only tend to offer battery warranty replacement up to
6 months.

Addendum: Can anyone tell me how, or if it's possible to read and display
the PC's temperature from the thermocouple ? I believe I saw the actual temp
displayed when one of the Dell Technicians made me a visit and ran some
diagnostic; but I don't know where he got either the diagnostic or the
thermocouple's temperature. I made a search in "Control Panel/Support/" for
"Diagnostic", and "Temperature"; but the search came up empty. Thanks for
any input ! Ed VA Again

Hi & Thanks for Your Help !

I'll check-out that site you sent me in hopes for the best. Did you
happen to know anything about reading or displaying the actual thermocouple
temp; or how to find and run the diagnostics ?

Thanks Again !
