Fan Noise Issue

Hi there.
I just bought an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a new tower box. Works great!
However, I like going to sleep while listening to music stored on my
computer, and the turbine style noise made by the fans is not the best sleep
companion (previously listened to my music on a Dell Inspiron
700M<---Silent!).
I see that when I put my computer on hybernation mode, the fans go off, but
so does my music. Is there a mode which keeps the fans off and the WMP or
Real Audio on?
Thanks in advance,
Albert C

The last thing you want to do is turn/keep the fans off, especially when the
processor is in use. Doing so would toast the processor and most likely many other
components. I have a Core 2 Duo in an Antec Sonata case, it's noiseless until one of
the fans kicks up for a few seconds which is a very low hum and far/few between. I
even swapped out the processor fan for one that has a higher RPM.

If you have an over excessive amount of noise you may want to recheck the
heatsink/fan to make sure it's properly snapped into the holes on the motherboard and
the snapdowns are turned in the proper lockdown position.

You could also check the BIOS for settings that will slow the fan speed when temps
are low.

replace with better quality fans, and no there isnt a mode

Depending on the motherboard support for it, you could try
Speedfan from almico.com . Speedfan has the ability to program
the hardware chip that drives the fan, and if the motherboard
has a transistor to control the fan header, then Speedfan
can adjust the speed according to the measured temperature.

You need the fans to keep the system from burning itself up.

As others said, get better fans. They come in a wide variety of speeds and
cfm ratings. You'll pay more for quiet fans that move a lot of air (higher
cfm) but these prices are pretty reasonable, especially considering what
you're after. I've got a good example here of a power supply that sounds
like a helicopter, and another supply with a much larger fan that turns
slower while moving the same amount of air and is nearly silent. Just as an
example, there's a Pentium D 820 in that box and it's surprisingly quiet
with four fans running, case open. I haven't tried running WMP to see how
that impacts the fan speed/noise. (Also make sure you aren't running a
CPU-intensive screen saver...)

Open the case and check the wires leading to the fans. You may just need to
move those wires around to make the noise stop. I have done that quite a
bit.
Older fans can get loud due to damaged fan blades. New fans should not be
loud no matter what kind they are, so it is likely the wires causing the
noise.
Case fans should always be on when the PC is running.
Only the CPU fan should ever go off, and only if the BIOS is set to run it
only when necessary.
