False Error when saving files from IE 6

I am running XP Pro and IE 6. I have a wireless network setup in my home
and everything seems to be working fine except for when I try to save a
picture or file from the internet using right-click and "save picture as".
If I'm on my laptop and I try to save a file on my network's main computer
(remote folder) by going through "My Network Places" in the Save window, I
get an error message that says:

"Problem with Shortcut
The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'target.lnk' refers to is
unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network
resource is available, and then try again."

The thing is that when I click OK, the remote folder I'm trying to save to
opens anyway and everything is fine. How can I stop this false error
message from popping up every time? It is very annoying. Thanks for any
help you can offer.

I know this might seem silly, but try cleaning the
infrared lenses, and moving the infrared devices closer
together. Maybe just turn them to where they are pointed
more towards each other. Another possibility is mirrors
and other reflective items. Try moving thing around some.
An explanation of the mirror thing is it reflects infrared
signals. The computer picks up the signal from the
transmitter, then it picks up the reflected signal. The
reflected signal is interference. This would cause the
computer recieving the file to recieve it fine, it isn't
picking up the reflected signal. Then it says "OK, I got
it", and the computer recieving that message gets the
reflected signal to, so it hears "OOKK II GGoott iitt",
which it doesn't understand. Hence the weird "False Error"

Thanks, but I don't think that's it. Let me explain -- I have a main
computer (desktop) with the internet connection, 2 laptops in different
rooms, and one desktop in a bedroom, all sharing files. The problem happens
on ALL of the remote computers. They are all in different places and none
of them are near mirrors or the like.

I noticed today that I get the same error message described below when
trying to open a file remotely using other programs too, like UltraEdit (my
text editor). So, it's not just when saving a file from IE 6.

Can anyone else offer other suggestions? Thanks.

Thanks, but I find I never get an answer when posting to the
networking.wireless group. I posted this question there also and have not
received an answer yet and this is not the first time. I posted it here
because I originally thought the problem was happening only when I tried to
save a file from the internet using IE 6.

Yes, I see you posted there earlier in the month. Patience, dear (and if
you'll notice, I crossposted this thread to that NG for you), it looks like
*volunteers* there (includes MVPs) are most likely to be responding later in
the day.

Perhaps someone in WinXP General who's up on networking might come to your
aid.

Dianne - I have some questions for you:

A) Have you done the usual Windows troubleshooting:

1) scan with current antivirus ("current" means a version not earlier
than 2002 but using updated virus definitions); 2) remove spyware with
Spybot Search & Destroy (www.security.kolla.de) and Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com). Be sure to update these programs before running,
and it is a good idea to do virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode; 3) delete
temporary and Temporary Internet Files; 4) stop unnecessary services
programs from starting with Windows - see www.blackviper.com for
services info and www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm for programs
info.

B) Are all computers on the same Workgroup, subnet mask (255.255.255.0),
network (192.168.1.xxx)? Unique computer names, none of the computers
have the same name as users? Identical user accounts with passwords all
created on the machines sharing resources?

C) Is the network healthy and fully functioning within the lan?

After you answer these questions, we can move forward. I've read the
previous posts in this thread and I don't see anything about virus and
spyware scanning.

Yes, Malke, all virus and spyware up to date and computers are clean as a
whistle. All unique names, all the same workgroup. Everything else
functions beautifully. Just get that error message when opening a file from
another computer in UltraEdit or when saving from the internet in IE 6.
Then, the file proceeds to open anyway after I click OK. More an annoyance
than anything else. It just gets to me after a while.

Thanks for responding. I will work on my patience. :0
