False device by Add Hardware

Hi:

Recently, I had a repair installation of Windows XP Pro after SP2, which
also reinstalled.

Now when I run Add Hardware, it has identified that I have an external tape
device (which I don't have) and gives me an error message for it cannot find
"TapeController".

I couldn't find any information from the net or MS KB about this
"TapeController" driver thing and I am sure that I don't have one. The
closest thing is a Sony DVD burner (DRU-500A) but it does not need any
driver.

Can anyone kindly tell me how to remove this from my hardware profile?

Thanks in advance.

If I understand right, it is showing up in the device
manager with a yellow "!" The quick and dirty approach
is to disable the device (right-click|properties|disable)
so it doesn't bother you again.

Almost every time I've done an install of XP I've gotten that error
message. I just say Cancel and it goes away. Not a clue why it thinks
there's a tape drive attached. Nothing in Device Manager that shows
such a thing either.

Hi:

Mike, thanks for the suggestion, but it does not show on device manager.

Ok, I will just click cancel and yes it will get away.

Just very curious and don't feel comfortable, because I thought it might be
a mess up of the hardware profile due to the re-installation.

My other machines won't have the same thing.

Thanks.
