Failure to reboot

While installing Norton antivirus 2005 I was asked to reboot my computer. My
computer failed to reboot and indeed appears to be dead in the water.
Doesn't seem to load anything. I contacted Symantec and they referred me to
Microsoft. It appears as if my hard drive is wiped out. Is the only
solution to replace the Hard drive and start over? In addition the product
code on my copy of XP is partially unreadable(one of the kids spilled
something on the desk, it dried and pulled off some of the characters in the
code). How do I get the code? Obviously I'm using another computer for this
communication.

I will not even install Norton on a customer's machine...I hate it that
bad...AVG Antivirus is FREE, does not bloat the system like Norton, and can
be setup to update it's definitions automatically, the perfect thing for a
un-net saavy user that downloads everything and insists on clicking "yes" on
popups... :) There are several other good AV programs as well that are
still free...
